IPTV Player for Amazon Fire TV

Fire TV runs a version of Android but has no Google Play, so Opus Media Player is not installed from a store on the device. It is installed with the Downloader app, which is itself in Amazon's own app store. The procedure below is the one we publish and support.

It looks longer than it is. Two of the steps are one-off Fire OS settings you will never touch again, and the whole thing takes a few minutes.

Opus plays a playlist you already have. It provides no channels, streams or subscriptions.

Install on Fire TV with DownloaderFree to download. Opus plays your own playlist and includes no channels.

What Opus does on Fire TV

  • Plays M3U, M3U8 (HLS) and Xtream Codes sources on a Fire TV device.
  • Shows the EPG guide when the playlist supplies one.
  • Takes the playlist from a phone with QR Sync rather than remote typing.
  • Navigates entirely with the Fire TV remote.
  • Resumes films and series where they were stopped.

What Opus does not do

  • Opus does not sell, host or bundle channels, streams, playlists or subscriptions.
  • The app is empty when you install it. Nothing plays until you add a playlist you already have the right to use.
  • Opus is not an IPTV service and is not affiliated with any provider.

Install Opus Media Player on a Fire TV Stick

  1. Install the Downloader app

From the Fire TV home screen go to Find, then Search, and type Downloader. Open it from the results and choose Get or Download to install it.

  2. Turn on developer options

Go to Settings, then My Fire TV. If you do not see Developer Options, open About and click your Fire TV device seven times quickly. A message confirms developer options are on.

  3. Allow apps from unknown sources

Back in My Fire TV, open Developer Options and turn on Apps from Unknown Sources. On some Fire OS versions this is called Install Unknown Apps, in which case find Downloader in the list and switch it on.

  4. Open Downloader

Return to the home screen, open Apps, then My Apps, and start Downloader. Allow the permission it asks for the first time and dismiss the quick start prompt.

  5. Enter the download address

Select the URL field and type bit.ly/opus-firetv, then choose Go. The download begins.

  6. Install the app

When the download finishes the installer opens by itself. Choose Install, and Opus Media Player is ready to launch.

  7. Add your playlist

Open Opus and either enter the M3U URL or Xtream Codes details with the remote, or use QR Sync from a phone that already has the playlist, which is considerably faster.

Troubleshooting on Fire TV

Downloader refuses to install the file
Apps from Unknown Sources has not been allowed for Downloader. Go back to Settings, My Fire TV, Developer Options and switch it on, then run the download again.
Developer Options is missing from the menu
Newer Fire OS builds hide it. Open Settings, My Fire TV, About, then click your device name seven times in quick succession.
The download does not start
Check the address character by character. It has to be typed exactly; a single wrong character sends Downloader to a page that does not exist.
Constant buffering on a Fire TV Stick
The Stick is a small device on Wi-Fi and often sits behind the television, which blocks the signal. Move it to the front with the HDMI extender, or use the Ethernet adapter if you have one.
Storage is full
Fire TV Sticks ship with very little free space. Remove apps you do not use before installing, or the install will fail near the end.

Frequently asked questions

Is Opus in the Amazon Appstore?

It is installed with the Downloader app using the address above, which is the route we publish and support for Fire TV.

Is sideloading like this allowed?

Yes. Amazon provides the Apps from Unknown Sources setting on Fire OS for exactly this purpose, and Downloader is itself an Amazon Appstore app.

Does Opus come with channels on Fire TV?

No. You supply your own playlist or subscription.

Can I avoid typing the playlist on the remote?

Yes. Add it in Opus on a phone first, then use QR Sync to move it to the Fire TV.

Which Fire TV devices work?

Fire TV Sticks and Fire TV devices generally. Older, low-memory models will struggle with very large playlists.
