How to Use an M3U Playlist: Setup, EPG and Common Fixes
An M3U playlist is a list of stream addresses and labels that a compatible player can read. It is not the video service itself, and it does not prove that every stream in the list is authorised or currently available.
Opus Media Player can play an M3U or M3U8 URL that you already have the right to use. Opus does not create, sell or distribute playlists, channels or subscriptions.
What is an M3U playlist?
M3U is a text-based playlist format. It can contain stream URLs, channel or programme names, group labels and other metadata that a player uses to organise the list.
An M3U8 URL is the UTF-8 variant commonly used for internet playlists. The playlist points to streams; it is not the stream itself. A player can only show what the source makes available.
What do I need before adding an M3U playlist?
- A playlist URL
- Use the complete M3U or M3U8 URL issued by a source you are allowed to use. Do not share it publicly.
- A supported device
- Opus supports iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Android, Android TV and Fire TV, with device-specific requirements.
- An internet connection
- The playlist and its streams are accessed online. An M3U URL does not make playback available offline.
- Optional EPG data
- The electronic programme guide appears only when the source provides compatible EPG data.
How do I add an M3U playlist to Opus?
Get the complete URL
Copy the M3U or M3U8 URL exactly as issued by the source. Treat the URL like account information and do not paste it into a public post or support ticket.
Install Opus on your device
Use the App Store, Google Play or the supported Fire TV installation route. Choose the device guide if you need platform-specific steps.
Choose the M3U option
Open Opus, choose to add a playlist and select the M3U option rather than the Xtream Codes option.
Paste the URL and import
Paste the complete URL and wait while Opus reads the playlist. A large list may take longer during its first import.
Check categories and guide data
Opus can organise the groups and metadata supplied by the source. EPG data appears only if the source includes compatible guide information.
What is the difference between M3U and Xtream Codes?
- M3U or M3U8
- Usually one playlist URL containing stream addresses and labels.
- Xtream Codes
- Usually a host address plus a username and password entered into separate fields.
- What they have in common
- Both are source details supplied by a separate service. Neither format is a channel package supplied by Opus.
- Which should I choose?
- Use the format your source issued. Do not convert or retype the details unless the source tells you to.
What is EPG and why is it empty?
EPG means electronic programme guide. It is metadata that can show programme names, descriptions and times alongside the streams in a playlist.
EPG data comes from the playlist source, not from the player. If the source sends no compatible guide data, the EPG remains empty in Opus and on other players using the same source. Ask the source issuer whether a separate EPG URL is required before changing app settings.
Why is my M3U playlist not loading?
Check the source first
Ask the source issuer to confirm that the URL is active and that the account has not expired. Do not send the full URL or credentials in a public message.
Check the copied URL
A missing character, added space or truncated URL can prevent an import. Copy it again from the original source instead of retyping it.
Separate import from playback
If the list imports but one channel fails, that channel or stream may be offline. If the entire list fails, focus first on the URL, account and source availability.
Check device and network limits
Some sources limit simultaneous connections or devices. Stop playback on another device and retry if the source imposes that kind of limit.
Contact the right support team
The source issuer handles expired accounts, missing channels and offline streams. Opus Support handles the app and import behavior; provide device details without sharing credentials.
Can I use an M3U playlist on a TV?
Yes, if the TV device is supported and the source allows that connection. Add the playlist on a phone or tablet first when possible, then use QR Sync on Apple TV, Android TV or Fire TV to avoid typing a long URL with a remote.
The TV still needs an internet connection, and the source may limit how many devices can connect at the same time.
Frequently asked questions
Does Opus provide free M3U playlists?
No. Opus provides the player only. Random free playlists may be unauthorised, unsafe or quickly expire, so use a source you are allowed to access instead of downloading an unknown list.
Can I use a downloaded M3U file in Opus?
Opus setup is based on an M3U or M3U8 URL, or an Xtream Codes login. If you only have a local file, ask the source issuer for the supported URL format rather than uploading it publicly.
Why does my M3U playlist load without programme information?
Programme information comes from EPG data supplied by the source. If the source does not include compatible EPG data, the playlist can load successfully while the guide remains empty.
Should I send my M3U URL to support?
Do not post a full M3U URL, username or password publicly. Contact the relevant support channel with redacted details and the device/app information needed to investigate the problem.
