IPTV Player for Android Phones and Tablets

Opus Media Player is on Google Play for Android phones and tablets. You give it an M3U or M3U8 URL, or an Xtream Codes host, username and password, and it plays the playlist behind them.

Nothing is included with the app. Opus sells no channels and bundles no subscriptions, so it is only of use to someone who already has a playlist.

On Android the phone is usually also the device you use to set up the television, because QR Sync copies the playlist from here to an Android TV or Fire TV without any typing on a remote.

What Opus does on Android

  • Plays M3U and M3U8 (HLS) playlists and Xtream Codes accounts.
  • Shows an EPG guide when the playlist source supplies one.
  • Sorts live channels, films and series into categories where the source labels them.
  • Resumes series and films from where you stopped.
  • Hands the playlist to a television with QR Sync.

What Opus does not do

  • Opus does not sell, host or bundle channels, streams, playlists or subscriptions.
  • The app is empty when you install it. Nothing plays until you add a playlist you already have the right to use.
  • Opus is not an IPTV service and is not affiliated with any provider.

Set up Opus Media Player on Android

  1. Install from Google Play

Open Google Play on the phone or tablet, search for Opus Media Player, and install it. The package is com.biel.opus.media.player, published by BIEL LLC.

  2. Have your playlist details ready

Either an M3U or M3U8 URL, or the host, username and password for an Xtream Codes account. Your provider issues these.

  3. Add the playlist

Open Opus, choose to add a playlist and pick the M3U or the Xtream option. Paste rather than retype: a single wrong character in a long URL is the most common cause of a failed setup.

  4. Let it load

Opus reads the playlist and builds the categories. The first load of a large playlist takes the longest.

  5. Check the guide

Where the source publishes EPG data, the guide appears by itself.

  6. Optional: send it to the TV

If you also use an Android TV or a Fire TV, use QR Sync from this device rather than entering the playlist again on the television.

Troubleshooting on Android

Playback stops when the screen turns off
Android battery optimisation suspends background apps. In Android Settings, find Opus under Apps, open Battery and allow unrestricted background use.
The playlist will not load
Open the same URL in Chrome on the phone. If the browser cannot fetch it either, the URL or the subscription has expired and the player is not at fault.
Everything buffers
IPTV streams arrive at a fixed bitrate and do not step down when the connection weakens, so a marginal signal shows up as constant buffering. Compare Wi-Fi with mobile data to work out which side is short of bandwidth.
The guide never fills in
The EPG belongs to your playlist source. If the source sends none, no player can show one.
Xtream Codes login is rejected
Enter the host by itself with no path after it, and check that the account has not run out. Providers frequently limit how many devices may be connected at the same time.

Frequently asked questions

Does Opus give me channels?

No. It is a player for a playlist you already have; it provides no content of its own.

Which Android versions are supported?

Google Play shows the current requirement on the listing for com.biel.opus.media.player and will not offer the app to a device that cannot run it.

Is there a version for Android TV?

Yes, and the setup differs enough that it has its own page.

Can I use one playlist on the phone and the TV at once?

That depends on your provider. Most limit simultaneous connections, and exceeding the limit looks like a login failure on the second device.

Is it free?

The download is free. Optional paid tiers exist; the current prices are shown on the store listing.
