IPTV Player for Apple TV

The hard part of IPTV on a television is not playback, it is getting the playlist onto the device. An M3U URL is long, case sensitive and full of punctuation, and the tvOS on-screen keyboard is the worst possible way to enter one.

Opus Media Player solves that with QR Sync: you add the playlist once on your iPhone or iPad, scan a code on the television, and the setup moves across. After that the Apple TV plays your own playlist with a guide built for a remote rather than a touchscreen.

Opus provides no channels. It plays the playlist you already have the right to use.

What Opus does on Apple TV

  • Plays M3U, M3U8 (HLS) and Xtream Codes sources on the television.
  • Takes the playlist from a phone or tablet through QR Sync instead of on-screen typing.
  • Shows the EPG guide in a layout meant for the Siri Remote.
  • Moves between channels quickly without going back to a menu each time.
  • Continues series and films from where they were left.

What Opus does not do

  • Opus does not sell, host or bundle channels, streams, playlists or subscriptions.
  • The app is empty when you install it. Nothing plays until you add a playlist you already have the right to use.
  • Opus is not an IPTV service and is not affiliated with any provider.

Set up Opus Media Player on Apple TV

  1. Check the tvOS version

Opus needs tvOS 18.0 or later. On the Apple TV open Settings, then General, then Software Updates, and update if an older version is installed.

  2. Install Opus on the Apple TV

Open the App Store on the Apple TV, search for Opus Media Player and install it.

  3. Add the playlist on your phone first

Install Opus on an iPhone or iPad and add your M3U URL or Xtream Codes login there, where you have a real keyboard.

  4. Open QR Sync on the television

Start Opus on the Apple TV and choose the sync option. A QR code appears on the screen.

  5. Scan the code with the phone

In Opus on the phone, use the sync function to scan the code shown on the television. The playlist setup transfers across; nothing has to be typed with the remote.

  6. Play

The channel list and, where the source provides it, the guide appear on the Apple TV. Pick a channel and play.

Troubleshooting on Apple TV

Opus does not appear in the tvOS App Store
That almost always means the Apple TV is on tvOS 17 or older. Update to tvOS 18.0 or later and search again. Very old Apple TV models cannot reach tvOS 18.
QR Sync does not connect
Both devices have to be on the same network. A guest network, or a router setting that stops devices seeing each other, will block it.
Channels buffer on the television but play on the phone
The television is usually the device on Wi-Fi at the far end of the house. Wire the Apple TV to the router with Ethernet if you can; IPTV streams do not adapt to a weak connection the way streaming services do.
The guide is empty on the television
The EPG is supplied by your playlist, not by Opus. If it is missing here it will be missing on every device using the same source.
A channel plays with sound but no picture
The stream is using a codec the device cannot decode. Other channels from the same provider will normally be unaffected; report the specific channel to your provider.

Frequently asked questions

Which Apple TV models work?

Any Apple TV that can run tvOS 18.0 or later.

Do I have to buy the app again for the Apple TV?

No. It is the same universal app as on iPhone and iPad.

Can I set it up without a phone?

You can type the details in with the Siri Remote, but QR Sync from a phone exists precisely because typing a long M3U URL on a television is unpleasant.

Does Opus provide channels for Apple TV?

No. You need your own playlist or subscription from a provider.

Does it support the Apple TV 4K picture modes?

Opus plays the stream your source sends. If the provider sends 4K, the Apple TV displays 4K; the player does not upscale anything.
